Department of Silviculture

Department of Silviculture, Faculty of Forestry (IPB) was founded on the basis of Decree of IPB rector number 112/K13/OT/2005 on 2 August 2005 and constituted the first silviculture department in Indonesia.

Vision of Department of Silviculture is becoming the prominent study program in Asia with main competence of Tropical Silviculture, with entrepreneurship character, and is based on harmony. This competence mandate is manifested into 3 divisions within Department of Silviculture, namely Division of Forest Ecology, Division of Silviculture, and Division of Forest Protection.

Competence of Division of Forest Ecology is applied at the stage of pre and post development/rehabilitation of forest ecosystem, starting from studying the characteristics of ecosystem types, development of superior tree species, maintaining and improving biogeochemical cycles, identification and development of interaction models between trees/forests and environment for improving productivity and quality of the environment, and studying the effect of forest development toward quality of soils, water and microclimate.

Competences of Division of Silviculture are improvement of growth site quality (comprising tree ecophysiology, mycorrhiza technology, rhizobium technology, fertilizer application technology, organic matter application technology, soil water absorption and storage technology), genetic improvement (comprising forest genetics, tree improvement, management of seed sources, vegetative propagation, seed technology), system and techniques of silviculture (comprising development of silvicultural system, agroforestry, planning and making of tree plantation, planting and plantation maintenance), and ex-mining area reclamation and revegetation.

Competence of Division of Forest Protection are forest fire control and assessment of impact of forest and land fire on the basis of fire behavior and tropical forest ecosystem,  development of forest entomology studies (including useful arthropods and harmful arthropods on the basis of ecosystem), development of analysis and identification system of forest pathology, development of system of controlling disturbance toward forests, and development of monitoring and analysis method of forest health at various forest functions.

Department of Forest Resource Conservation and Ecotourism

Department of Forest Resource Conservation and Ecotourism

Department of Forest Resource Conservation and Ecotourims (DKSHE) was initially named as Department of Forest Resource Conservation (DKSHE) which constituted the first department or study program in Indonesia in the field of forest resource conservation, which was officially founded on the basis of decree of IPB rector, number: 103 year 1982, dated 14 November 1982.

Vision of DKSHE is “becoming the development center for science, technology, art, and human resources in the field of conservation of tropical biodiversity and environment”.

Scientific mandate being given to DKSHE is development of science, technology, and art in the field of forest resource conservation which comprise protection of life supporting system, preservation and utilization of wildlife and its ecosystem, and ecotourism and environmental services.

DKSHE consists of Division of Ecology and Management of Wildlife, Division of Flora/ Plant Diversity Conservation, Division of Conservation Area Management, Division of Nature Recreation and Ecotourism, and Division of Urban Forest and Environmental Services.  Competence and scientific mandate for Division of Ecology and Management of Wildlife comprise  conservation of wildlife (wild animal) in-situ and ex-situ.  Division of Conservation of Flora/Plant Diversity possesses scientific mandate for developing science, technology and empowerment of traditional wisdom in conservation of plant diversity which comprises protection, preservation and utilization in sustainable manner. Division of Conservation Area Management possesses mandate for development of policy and management of conservation area in terrestrial/land area (primary subject) and waters/aquatic area (supporting subject).

Division of Nature Recreation and Ecotourism possess mandate for development of  planning and management of ecotourism and conservation education. Division of Urban Forest and Environmental Services possesses scientific mandate which is related with development of science, technology, and management of urban forest and environmental services which comprise objects of water, air, and climate for supporting the quality of life supporting system.

Department of Fores Management

Department of Forest Management

Department of Forest Management (DMNH) was established in year 1969 as one of the oldest Department in Forestry Faculty (IPB).   With the vision of becoming a prominent educational institution in developing science, technology, and art of tropical forest management on ecosystem basis for ensuring the sustainability of social, ecological and economical function of forests, Department of Forest Management (DMNH) possesses scientific mandate to develop science and technology and policy which are needed to plan, organize, execute and evaluate the system of organizing and managing forest on ecosystem basis.

The main competences of DMNH are manifested in Division of Forestry Planning, Division of Forest Resources Utilization, and Division of Forestry Policy.

Competences of Forestry Planning Division are forest biometrics, forest planning, analysis of forest resources inventory system, forestry geographical information system (GIS), spatial model, remote sensing, qualitative forest management, forest hydrology, watershed management, and soil and water conservation.

Competences of Forestry Policy Division are economics and management of forest resources, forestry institutional economics, forestry sociology, community forestry, ethnoforestry, forestry politics and economy, forestry development economics, social forestry, and forestry policy.

Competences of Forest Resources Utilization Division are forest harvesting, opening up of forest area, forest utilization operation, forest engineering, harvesting of non wood forest products, and forest ergonomic.
